2 Wilmington Destination Imagination Teams Compete At State Tournament

CHELMSFORD, MA — On Sunday, March 6, 2016, six teams from Wilmington Destination Imagination (DI) attended the annual regional tournament at Chelmsford High School.

All teams performed impressively and two teams even earned the opportunity to participate in Destination Imagination’s Massachusetts State Tournament, which took place at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday, March 26, 2016!

(EDITOR’S NOTE: Wilmington Apple hopes to receive an update on how the teams did at the State Tournament on March 26, and will make sure to pass that along to readers.)

The Wilmington teams invited to the state tournament include the “Apple Pierates,” led by team manager Lisa Stribley, a team of middle schoolers who were awarded first place for their solution to the Fine Arts Challenge, Get A Clue; and a team of North Intermediate School students, led by team managers Michelle Kane and Jen McCarron, who won a spot at the state tournament for their solution to the Service Learning Challenge, The Meme Event.

These teams competed with other Massachusetts teams that have worked to solve open-ended challenges that require young people to learn and apply knowledge in many different areas of academic interest; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) play a part, but just as important are accomplishments in improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, teamwork and community service.

However, the participants will tell you that the best part of being on a DI team is the fun they have and the friends they make, working together on projects that they have created!
Destination Imagination is an international program that allows students from kindergarten through college age to learn and experience the creative process.

The art of collaboration and the ability to make presentations, solve problems, take risks and generally “think on your feet” are some of the skills the program promotes. Every year more than 150,000 young people compete in tournaments around the world.

Other teams from Wilmington which participated in the Chelmsford regional tournament included a third grade team led by team manager Margo Krukonis, middle schoolers led by team manager Leslee Quick, middle schoolers led by team manager Paula Steinmetz and high schoolers led by team manager Terry McDermott.

As seniors graduating from high school this year, DI team members Lily See and Vicky McDermott, along with other seniors from the region, were awarded graduation tassels at the Chelmsford tournament award ceremony.

Wilmington Destination Imagination is partially funded by the Wilmington Public School system and we are grateful for their support. For more information about Wilmington Destination Imagination, please contact Terry McDermott at wilmingtondi@gmail.com.
