WILMINGTON, MA — The Town of Wilmington has earned an Excellence in Loss Control Award from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) for its ongoing commitment in the area of controlling costs and preventing financial losses. MIIA, the town’s property and casualty insurance provider, announced the award during the association’s annual meeting in Boston on January 23rd. This is the second year the town has achieved this award; it was also recognized for excellence in 2014.
According to MIIA, Wilmington is a leader in risk management with an active employee safety committee and dedication to training in all departments, as well as to identifying and securing key resources needed to boost safety and control losses. For example, already an innovator in school safety and security, the town utilized a special MIIA grant this year to provide school, police and fire personnel with two-way radios in order to enhance communication during emergency situations. Also, the local Department of Public Works provides monthly training “tailgate” meetings for staff, during which they review key safety topics and communicate procedural expectations.
“This award demonstrates the level of commitment to safety we have as a town and employer,” said Jeffrey Hull, Town Manager. Mr. Hull and Board of Selectmen Chairman Michael Champoux accepted the award on behalf of the town.
MIIA Executive Vice President Stanley Corcoran said, “Wilmington works hard to identify and implement innovative measures that help keep employees safe and well, enhance local infrastructure and services, and manage budgets and taxpayer dollars responsibly. Our partnership with communities like Wilmington helps us to continually develop best practices, programs and trainings that have a positive impact on insurance management and that help cut municipal costs for so many of our members around the Commonwealth.”
The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) is the non-profit insurance arm of the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA). Municipal insurance its only business, MIIA insures nearly 400 cities, towns, and other public entities in Massachusetts. For more information, visit www.emiia.org and www.mma.org.
