WILMINGTON, MA – Wilmington C.A.R.E.S. is pleased to announce the launch of BOKS, a before-school physical activity program, at the Boutwell Early Childhood Center, Shawsheen Elementary School, and Woburn Street Elementary School this winter. BOKS (“Build Our Kids’ Success”) prepares children for a day of learning and is an important step in helping children gain an appreciation of the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last a lifetime. BOKS was inspired by Dr. John Ratey’s book “Spark”. Dr. Ratey, of Harvard Medical School, states that “exercise is the single most powerful tool that we have to optimize the function of our brains.” Classes are filled with team-oriented games and provide plenty of opportunity for play, since the program focuses on fun!
A typical BOKS class is 50-minutes long and includes:
- Fun warm-up game or movement drills
- Running activity, relay races, obstacles courses and strength movements
- Fun games
- Cool down and a BOKS Bit-a nutrition component of the program
BOKS will run every Tuesday and Thursday morning from December 1 through February 11 when school is in session:
- Boutwell BOKS class meets from 6:45am to 7:45am
- Shawsheen BOKS class meets from 7:30am to 8:30am
- Woburn Street BOKS class meets from 7:00am to 8:00am
