WILMINGTON, MA – At its meeting last week, the Wilmington School Committee was given a report summarizing the results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey that was administered to Wilmington 7th-11th graders last spring.
IMPORTANT NOTES: Students answered the questions anonymously during a single class period. Parents were able to opt their children out – few did. Invalid responses (e.g., blatant lying) were not included in the results. Questions varied between the high school and middle schools surveys, in part, because the high school survey was based on the national version and the middle school survey was based on the Massachusetts version.
The report was divided into SEVEN sections. Below is a summary (of the summary) of the section on sexual activity.
Had sexual intercourse at least once in their lives:
- 10% of 7th graders
- 14% of 8th graders
- 22.6% of 9th graders
- 22.8% of 10 graders
- 40% of 11th graders
Among sexually active respondents: Have had sexual intercourse with 2 or more people:
- 57.9% of 7th graders
- 64.5% of 8th graders
- 48.4% of 9th graders
- 43.6% of 10th graders
- 41.8% of 11th graders
Among sexually active respondents: Used condom during last episode of sexual intercourse:
- 50% of 7th graders
- 48.5% of 8th graders
- 61.8% of 9th graders
- 72.5% of 10th graders
- 70.9% of 11th graders
Among sexually active respondents: Been pregnant or gotten someone pregnant
- 3.6% of 9th graders
- 0.6% of 10th graders
- 3.8% of 11th graders

Can’t speak for anyone else, but I know for a fact that no 9th grader in my class has ever been pregnant. Some people are lying. Same goes for sex, unless we are talking about having sex with yourself.
Agreed. The students intentionally make a mockery of the survey – have for years. Survey has no merit at all.
