WHS Senior Lawrence Gordon Receives Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington School Superintendent Mary DeLai presented WHS senior Lawrence Gordon with the 2015-2016 Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award at this week’s School Committee Meeting.

“He is an outstanding student and an active member of the Wilmington High School Community,” said Superintendent DeLai. “Each year, he has sought out new academic challenges, including numerous AP courses — 3 this year — and explored opportunities beyond the walls of Wilmington High School via the Virtual High School program.”

According to DeLai, Lawrence is the President of the National Honor Society, Secretary of the Model UN, Treasurer of the DECA Club, and member of the Academic Decathlon Team, Yearbook Club, and Photography Club.  He was also recently named an AP Scholar with Honors.

“He also manages to find the time to volunteer with several organizations in the Greater Wilmington community and works part-time at a local Dunkin Donuts store,” said DeLai.  “One of his greatest attributes to his outgoing and caring personality.”

Lawrence would like to become a physician, potentially specializing in endocrinology.

Wilmington School Committee Peggy Kane took time to recognize Lawrence’s parents — Larry and Tracey.

“It took hard work getting [Lawrence] to this point. It’s really delightful and a wonderful experience, but it certainly takes a lot of time and effort.  It shows what a wonderful family you that you have.”

The Superintendent’s Academic Excellence Award, sponsored by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, is given annually to a WHS student who has distinguished themselves in the pursuit of excellence during their high school careers.

Selection is based upon three factors: (1) three year cumulative GPA; (2) class rank; and (3) the personal selection by the Superintendent. The Superintendent is given leeway among the class’s top 5% for her selection.
