WHS School Resource Officer Brian Gillis Recognized By School Committee

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee recently recognized Detective Brian Gillis for his distinguished service as Wilmington High School’s School Resource Officer over the past four years.

Detective Gillis recently left the position after receiving a promotion within the Police Department to Prosecutor, following the retirement of Detective James White.

Gillis had worked as the High School’s School Resource Officer since 2011, after serving for ten years in the Police Department’s Traffic-Safety Division.

The Wilmington School Committee presented Gillis with a certificate of commendation at its most recent board meeting on Wednesday, October 7.

School Superintendent Mary DeLai, School Committee Chairwoman Peggy Kane and Police Chief Michael Begonis all took an opportunity to praise Gillis.

“I so appreciate the way that you have dealt with the student body and the relationships that you formed with both staff and students,” said Superintendent Mary DeLai. “The students really, really respect you. You were a great role model for them.”

“You’ve done some incredible work here for Wilmington High School as well as the school district,” continued DeLai. “We thank you so much for your service and we congratulate you on your promotion.”

“The staff says so many nice things about you as do the parents and people around town,” said Chairwoman Peggy Kane.  “Your one-on-one touch [made] a huge difference in a lot of these students in lives.  You’ve been so good at your job and we really appreciate it.”

“It was a hard decision to ask [Detective Gillis] to leave his [School Resource Officer] position,” said Police Chief Michael Begonis.  “He certainly left the school resource officer position in a better stead than when he took it over.  I’m sure he’ll do the same thing in his new position as the prosecutor for the Police Department. I can’t ask for anybody better.”
