Ex-baseball star Jeff Allison gave a substance abuse awareness talk to the 8th graders at the Wilmington Middle School on Friday morning. Allison’s promising baseball career was derailed by a heroin addiction. (Photo from Tony Coppola, managing director of Jeff Allison Baseball, on Twitter).
In his weekly newsletter to staff, Principal Ralph Olsen wrote: “Our sincere appreciation to the Wilmington Board of Health for funding Jeff Allison’s presentation to our Grade 8 students. His powerful message regarding substance abuse resonated with our students. Being a local high school baseball phenomenon and being a first round draft pick of the Miami Marlins was a connection for many potential athletes, males and females. It was his personal addiction and how he has battled for his true identity which was a topic of discussion at lunch.”
