School Committee Meeting Round-Up: Middle School Schedule Changes Approved

WILMINGTON, MA – Here are five highlights from last night’s School Committee Meeting.

1.) The School Committee unanimously approved the previously discussed proposed changes to the Wilmington Middle School schedule for the 2015-2016 school year.  There were little questions and comments from the board, as members thoroughly discussed the issue at their last meeting on March 25.  Read the details of the approved proposal HERE.

2.) The School Committee unanimously approved awarding the student transportation services bid to North Reading Transportation, the district’s current provider.  The school bus company will be with Wilmington for another three years.

According to a memo from Paul Ruggiero, Director of Administration and Finance, “the new contract term is from August 1, 2015 through July 31, 2018.  The proposal submitted by North Reading Transportation prices FY16 regular day transportation at $921,600, an increase of approximately 3.9% over FY15.  The majority of this increase is due to updated prevailing wage rates.”

3.) As has been the practice in the past, the School Committee unanimously voted not to participate in the state’s School Choice Program because of a lack of available space to accommodate out-of-town students.

4.) The School Committee unanimously approved the WHS DECA team’s request for an out-of-state, overnight field trip to the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida, from April 25 through April 29.  16 students and 2 chaperones will be attending.

5.) Superintendent Mary DeLai announced that Analog Devices will be holding its annual Technology Fair at the Wilmington Middle School next Friday, April 17, from 7:30am to 1:45pm, in the technology classrooms.

This was the first School Committee Meeting to take place in the new Wilmington High School, emanating from the Large Instruction Room on the first floor.  Space looks fantastic.  All members were present except Manny Mulas. The Committee next meets on Wednesday, April 22.

NOTE: Several other issues that were discussed at the School Committee Meeting will be featured in their own articles over the next day or two.
