Wilmington’s Allison Bolanos Raises Funds For Communication Boards At 4 School Playgrounds

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington’s Department of Public Works recently installed four communication boards at the playgrounds for the Boutwell Early Childhood Center, Woburn Street Elementary School, Shawsheen Elementary School, and North Intermediate School.

These 3′ x 5′ boards allow non-verbal students to communicate with verbal students while playing on the playground.

The project was made possible thanks to the fundraising efforts of Wilmington High School graduate Allison Bolanos. Bolanos, while a WHS sophomore, spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the purchase and installation of communication boards at the school playgrounds.

Now a freshman at Providence College, where she majors in Elementary and Special Education and participates in the school’s Best Buddies program, Bolanos would like to thank the residents who donated to her efforts. She also is appreciative of the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, which created the signs, and the Wilmington DPW, which installed the signs.

Bolanos’s exceeded her fundraising goals and plans to donate the remaining money to Wilmington’s Beyond TOPS organization and the Best Buddies Club at Wilmington High School.
