To the Editor and Wilmington voters:
As Wilmington continues to grow, many residents, especially seniors, are understandably concerned about two things: protecting the character of our neighborhoods and keeping property taxes under control. To me, these concerns are not separate issues, they are closely connected to how we plan for the town’s economic future.
One of the best ways to ease the pressure on residential taxpayers is by strengthening Wilmington’s commercial tax base. When responsible businesses choose to locate here, they contribute to the tax base, support local jobs, and help reduce the burden placed on homeowners. Economic development, when done thoughtfully, can benefit the entire community.
At the same time, attracting the right kinds of businesses must go hand in hand with protecting the neighborhoods that make Wilmington such a great place to live. If I am elected, one of my first priorities will be to push the board to coordinate with our Town Manager, Planning Department and Economic Development Committee to see how the Select Board can assist them in their work. I believe the Select Board should begin discussions on how tax incentives could work hand in hand with targeted zoning reform as well as other measures in order to bring underserved parts of town into economic prosperity.
Wilmington has an opportunity to take a more proactive approach to encouraging smart economic investment while preserving the qualities that define our community. By focusing on responsible commercial development, we can strengthen our local economy, protect our neighborhoods, and work toward keeping taxes manageable for the families who live here.
I respectfully ask for your vote on April 25th to bring much needed change to the Select Board.
