SCAM ALERT: Wilmington Police Alerts Residents Of RMV & Medicare Scams

Below is an announcement from the latest Wilmington Town Topics Newsletter:

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Police Department wants our residents, especially seniors and family caregivers, to remain vigilant against a variety of scams that continue to circulate throughout Massachusetts.

Scammers are increasingly using phone calls, text messages, emails, and even fake official notices to trick people into sharing personal information, clicking harmful links, or sending money. Recently, residents have reported text message scams claiming to be from the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) threatening license suspension unless a link is clicked or payment is made, a tactic that police have warned is fraudulent and should be ignored.

Scammers may also pose as government agencies, Medicare representatives, or other trusted contacts, even claiming to be a grandchild in distress, to create urgency and pressure victims into acting without checking facts. Seniors should be particularly cautious. Medicare scams, where callers pretend to be Medicare or insurance partners and ask for Medicare or Social Security numbers, have been on the rise statewide and health benefit organizations advise that legitimate programs will never call unprompted or ask for sensitive personal data. Police strongly urge families to talk with older relatives about these schemes, never to provide personal or financial information in response to unsolicited contacts, and to confirm any urgent requests directly with family members or the official agency using known contact information.

If you suspect a scam, hang up and contact the Wilmington Police Department at 978-658-5071 to report the incident.
