WELLESLEY, RI — Dennis Joseph Hughes, 87 years, of Westerly Rhode Island, passed away on January 21, 2026 at Westerly Hospital. Dennis was the loving husband of Deborah Viguers Hughes. Born in Portland, Maine, on September 25, 1938, he was the son of Loretta Michaud and Roland Joseph Hughes.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents, brother Norman, sisters Elaine, Claudette, and Charlene. Besides his wife of 55 years he is survived by his two sons, David Hughes of Westford MA and Peter Hughes of Carlsbad CA, daughters-in-law Heather Hughes and Shelbi Randenberg, grandchildren Abigail, Rachel, and Lyra.
Dennis attended Cheverus High School in Portland Maine where he was a star athlete and captain of both the football and basketball teams. He graduated from Northeastern Business College in Portland. Dennis and Debby met while working for the Hildreth Network in the late 1960’s. He went on to work as the Controller for Stuarts Department Stores in Franklin MA for 25 years and later as the Chief Financial Officer for Channel Building Company in Wilmington MA until his retirement in 2007. Dennis and Debby raised their family in Andover MA and spent much of every summer at the family vacation home in Quonochontaug RI. Quonnie held a special place in Dennis’ heart. There he loved boating, fishing, jogging, tennis, swimming and especially relaxing in his beach chair with family and friends. He was a lifelong Boston sports fan who loved sharing his enthusiasm with everyone. Dennis was a hard worker who was loved by all for his vibrant personality and humorous stories. There will be a celebration of his life for family and friends in Quonnie this upcoming summer.
