Below is an obituary from Chapman Funerals & Cremations:
OSTERVILLE, MA — Peter “Coach” George Melchiono was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Joan, the love of his life and greatest teammate. Pete was born on February 11, 1933, to the late Michael and Louise (Porter) Melchiono and was raised in Medford, Massachusetts, where the foundations of his lifelong values-faith, family, discipline, and service-were firmly set.
A proud 1950 graduate of Malden Catholic High School, Pete went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955. Following his military service, he attended Merrimack College, earning his bachelor’s degree and, more importantly, meeting the woman who would become his partner in all things, Joan Hewett. He later continued his education, earning his master’s degree from Boston College. Pete and Joan were married in August of 1954 and shared a devoted marriage that spanned decades, built on love, mutual respect, and family.
Pete dedicated his professional life to education and athletics, shaping countless young lives as a teacher and coach. His career took him to Wilmington High School, Chelmsford High School, Merrimack College, and ultimately Barnstable High School, where he taught and coached from 1973 until his retirement in 1995. Known affectionately as “Coach,” Pete was respected not only for his knowledge of the game but for his integrity, mentorship, and unwavering belief in his players.
His contributions to athletics were widely recognized. Pete was inducted into the Merrimack College Athletic Hall of Fame, the Barnstable High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame. In 2001, he was honored with the prestigious John Mariucci Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association, a testament to his lasting impact on the sport and those who played it.
Above all else, Pete was a family man. He is survived by his children: Michael and his wife Kim, Gina and her partner, Billy, John and his wife Beth, and Paul. He took immense pride in and was deeply devoted to his grandchildren-Corinna, Amber, Cameron, Kelsey, Samantha, Taylor, Lyndsey, Tyler, and Chantel-each of whom held a special place in his heart. He was also blessed to be a loving great-grandfather to Raquel, Fallon, and Cassidy Joan, whose middle name honors the woman he loved so dearly.
Pete often reflected on his life with gratitude and humility, once saying, “I was a blessed soul with a great mom, dad and a great, great wife, great children, and living on Cape Cod.” Those who knew him would agree-Pete lived a full and meaningful life, rich in love, purpose, and faith.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Osterville on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial was private.
