Wilmington High School Athletic Hall Of Fame To Be Named In Honor Of Jack Cushing

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington voters will be asked to name the Wilmington High School Athletic Hall of Fame in honor of Jack Cushing at the Annual Town Meeting on Saturday, May 2, 2026

Cushing worked for the Department of Public Works for 16 years, including his final 6 years at Wilmington’s Head Groundskeeper. Outside of work, he spent much of his life volunteering on behalf of student athletes and the larger Wilmington community.

“From working on the town’s 250th anniversary celebrations, to being named a Wilmington Good Guy, to establishing an annual WHS Alumni softball tournament, to the bocce tournaments and league held at his home courts, to spearheading the town’s 275th anniversary, to his countless hours of community service with Wilmington Rotary Club, Interact Club, Fourth of July Committee, and Wilmington Recreation Commission, the man gets around,” summarized Daniel Chalmers in the Wilmington Town Crier back in 2010.

Upon retirement, Cushing would go on to serve as the right-hand man to then Athletic Director Ed Harrison, and subsequently create the Wildcat Athletic Alumni and Friends, which has been vital in supporting the Wilmington High School Athletic Hall of Fame, including the recent creation of the new display inside WHS.

Cushing continues to volunteer his time to this day.

“I am sure you all know Jack and the contributions he has made to this community and especially the support, commitment and dedication he has demonstrated his entire life towards the students and student-athletes at Wilmington High School,” wrote former Town Moderator Jim Stewart, who petitioned that the article be placed on the Town Meeting warrant. “I believe this is a well-deserved honor and I am proud to present this article to the Town.”

Stewart is recommending the plaque, which would be paid through private donations, be installed prominently near the new Hall of Fame display, across the hall from the gym named after Jack’s father, legendary WHS teacher, coach and athletic director Larry Cushing.
