WILMINGTON, MA — Robert Thayer Cassidy, “Bob,” age 85, of North Reading, MA, formerly a longtime resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.
Bob was born in Medford, MA, on June 20, 1940, and was the dear son of the late Gerard A. and Gertrude A. (Thayer) Cassidy. He was raised and educated in Medford and was a proud graduate of Medford High School.
Following high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He proudly served in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) division and was on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
On October 29, 1966, Bob married his beloved “sweetheart,” Mary Denise Brady. In 1974, the couple settled in Wilmington, where they raised their beautiful family. Bob was a devoted husband and a loving father who cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored.
Bob was a hardworking and dedicated professional. For over 30 years, he served as Circulation Manager for The Boston Globe. Outside of his career, Bob had a deep passion for photography. He was extremely talented behind the camera, belonged to several photography clubs throughout his life, and even started his own photography studio, capturing countless memories for family and friends over the years.
In his spare time, Bob enjoyed bike riding and was an avid long-distance cyclist. He traveled extensively on his bike, enjoying the opportunity to see new places and meet new people along the way.
Bob was a wonderful man who loved his family and friends with all his heart. He will be deeply missed.
Bob was the beloved husband of Mary “Denise” Cassidy; devoted father of Chris Cassidy and his wife Jennifer of Lynnfield, Shannon Bettencourt and her husband Steven of Tewksbury, Amy Cassidy of Rochester, NH, and Erin Howard and her husband Dennis of North Carolina. Loving “Papa” of Faith, James, Adam, Hope, Jacob, Cody, Hunter, Dakota, Nicholas, Tristan, Demetrius, Keanu, Satayana, and Cherokee. Dear brother of Gerard Cassidy and his wife Margaret of Ohio, formerly of Randolph, MA. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Private services for Bob will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
