Below is an announcement from Wilmington Community Television’s “Book Stew:”
“These were the secrets of the universe……and I had access to them!” – says author Katy Grabel. In the November Book Stew episode, I share guest Grabel’s vibrant memoir The Magician’s Daughter, a unique story of coming-of-age-on-the-stage.
In 1977, when Katy is fourteen, she takes to the road for eight months with her illusionist father Lee Grabel and her mother Helene, with the ultimate goal of headlining in Las Vegas. Katy shares the stress of magic show life: hauling trucks full of equipment, scenery, props (including a horse!) and a staff of eight. Being an adolescent with dreams of becoming a singer clash with her more pedestrian role of helping to charm and mystify the audience, while also making sure that no one can figure out how the sausage is made.
