ICYMI: Wildwood Elementary School Project Moves Forward Following Overwhelming Community Support

Below is a press release from the Wilmington Public Schools:

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Public Schools is pleased to announce that the Wilmington Elementary School Building Project, which will be located and constructed on the North Intermediate School site, has received overwhelming community support through both Town Meeting approval and a successful ballot vote on September 16th. This tremendous show of support from residents demonstrates the community’s shared commitment to high quality education and investment in the future of Wilmington’s children.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in providing Wilmington’s youngest learners and educators with a modern, cost-effective, educationally appropriate, and inspiring learning environment for generations to come. The project reflects years of collaboration among town officials, educators, designers, and residents to ensure that the new facility meets both present and future educational needs while remaining fiscally responsible.

The new facility, currently referred to as the Wilmington Elementary School, will consolidate the three elementary schools on the north side of Wilmington — North Intermediate, Woburn, and Wildwood —  into a single, purpose-built, and innovative learning facility. This consolidation will enable more efficient resource utilization, improved programming, and enhanced collaboration among staff and students.

With local approvals complete, the project will now advance into Module 6 — the Detailed Design Phase of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process. During this phase, the design team will refine the building’s architectural and engineering details, ensuring the new Wilmington Elementary School reflects the community’s educational vision while maintaining cost-effective and efficient design solutions developed collaboratively with the School Building Committee and broader community.

Construction is anticipated to begin in late June 2026, following completion of design development, construction documentation, permitting, and bidding. Once the new facility is complete in the summer of 2028, students and staff will move into the school for the start of the 2028–2029 school year. Following occupancy, the existing North Intermediate School will be demolished, and the site will undergo significant upgrades, including new parking areas, athletic fields, and outdoor learning spaces that will benefit both the school and the wider community.

When complete, the new Wilmington Elementary School will provide state-of-the-art learning spaces designed to foster collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation—supporting Wilmington’s educational mission and community values well into the future.

The District and Town extend sincere gratitude to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for its partnership and financial support; to the school staff who contributed to the project’s early planning and design; and to the many community members who participated in meetings, provided thoughtful feedback, and voted to move this important project forward.
