Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:
WILMINGTON, MA — George W. Hooper Sr., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
George was born in Everett, MA, to Elizabeth (Betty) Hooper-Grebb on June 2, 1939. He was the brother of the late Clarence A. Hooper and the beloved grandson of Arnold and Agnes Scurrah. As a young boy, George spent much of his time with his grandparents, helping them by shining shoes to assist with daily expenses. He often spoke fondly of those days, recalling them as some of his favorite childhood memories.
At the age of 14, George met the love of his life, Alice (McCarthy) Hooper, of Chelsea, MA. The two were married five years later, in 1958, and moved to Wilmington in 1969, where they raised their three boys — George, Gregg, and Glenn.
George and Alice were devoted parents, always supporting their boys’ interests and activities. Whether it was scouting trips, where George made sure everyone had the best meals, or driving the bus for the Wilmington Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, George was always there, fully involved and proud to help.
Early in his career, George worked in the construction field with a local asphalt paving company, helping to install sidewalks throughout the surrounding communities. He later served in law enforcement with the MBTA Police Department, as well as the Chelsea and Wilmington Police Departments. George then transitioned to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance, where he held several positions over the years before retiring.
George was deeply committed to serving the Wilmington community. He served for many years as a member and director of Wilmington Elderly Housing Authority, he served as Chairman of the Town Democratic Committee, he was an active volunteer with the Wilmington Community Fund and their annual walkathon, and later served as a member, then Chairman for the Wilmington Finance Committee, helping to review and manage the town’s annual budget. George was also honored to serve as a Selectman for the Town of Wilmington, a role he took great pride in.
George was a lifetime member of the Wilmington Knights of Columbus, where he was a Past Grand Knight, George was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective order of Elks, proud to be part of such a dedicated and compassionate organization.
Later in their lives George and Alice were snowbirds spending the winters at their home in Sebring, Florida where they made many lifelong friends.
George was predeceased by his wife, Alice, of 63 years; and he leaves behind his sons George W. Hooper 2nd and his wife Michelle of Wilmington, MA, Gregg W. Hooper of Conway, SC, and Glenn W. Hooper and his wife Kathleen of Abington, MA; his cherished granddaughter Julianne Hooper and her fiancé Shane Johnson of Dedham MA and grandson George W. Hooper 3rd and his wife Emma of Anchorage, Alaska. He is also survived by many dear family and friends who will deeply miss his kindness, humor, and generosity.
