WILMINGTON, MA — Mary A. Tufts (McCormick), age 83, of Palm Beach, FL, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, MA, passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born in East Boston, MA, on March 30, 1942; she was the dear daughter of the late Leo McCormick and the late Winifred (Combs) Swan and her late husband Willard.
As a young girl, Mary moved to Wilmington, MA, where she was raised and educated. Mary attended Wilmington High School where she made many friends and graduated with the Class of 1959. Following High School, Mary went on to continue her education at Catherine Gibbs Business School in Boston, earning her degree as an executive secretary.
In 1960, Mary married the “love of her life” David Tufts; the couple made their home on Main Street in Wilmington where they raised their family. Mary was very devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren; she was a wonderful daughter, sister, and aunt who would do anything to help her family.
Prior to retiring, Mary worked as an executive secretary for the Globe Ticket Company in Woburn for many years. Mary’s vast knowledge of business along with her work ethic and people skills made her quite successful throughout her career. Following her retirement, Mary and David enjoyed getting out of the New England Winters and became snowbirds for several months a year in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she made many friends and enjoyed the beautiful weather.
In her spare time, Mary loved to read, play cards, especially cribbage, go shopping and out to lunch, and hang out with family and friends. Mary will be fondly remembered for her kind heart, beautiful smile, and her love for her family and friends. She will forever be missed by all who knew her.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late David W. Tufts, devoted mother of Debbie Walsh and her husband Tom of West Palm Beach, FL, Sherry Kerrigan and her husband Danny of Londonderry, NH, Kimberly Sweeney and her husband Brian of Pittsfield, MA, and Stephen Tufts and his wife Rene of Poland, ME. Loving “Nana” of Ryan, Christopher and his wife Jessica, Stephanie and her husband Steven, Nicole, Justin and his wife Chanel, the late Zachary, Lindsay and her husband Tim, Stephen, Skylar, Cameron, and “Gigi” to her great-grandchildren Dylan, Carly, Kynlee, Lianna, Jordan, Savannah, Mia, Colton, and Delaney. Dear sister of Johnny McCormick and his wife Sheila of Woburn, Winifred “Winnie” Gagnon and her husband William of Burrillville, RI, Kathy Severino and her husband Paul of Weston, Billy Swan and his wife Nancy of Byfield, Peter Swan of San Antonio, TX, Susan Bagrowski of Bradenton, FL, the late Barbara Spiritus and the late Alan Swan. Mary was also very special to her late companion Mike Algieri and is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Wednesday, September 10th from 4:00-8:00 p.m. A Service to Celebrate Mary’s life will take place at the Funeral Home on Thursday, September 11th at 12:00 noon followed by interment in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
