LETTER: School Committee Member Stephen Turner Urges A “YES” Vote, Gets To The Heart Of The Matter

To the Wilmington Community,

I am writing to you in strong support of the school building project.

Please come to the town meeting on September 13th and the town vote on September  16thand vote in favor of this project on both days.

At the heart of this there are two key things we need to do.

Do what is needed to ensure that the future generations of Wilmington students have the best education in the best environment for learning.

Do what is most responsible for the finances of the town and specifically the taxpayers.

It is clear that:
– The three schools that we can replace with these votes are not able to support the current educational standards that parents expect and demand of the district (and town) for their students.
– The three schools that we can replace with these votes are physically old, far from accessible, and difficult to maintain.
– The three separate locations of the lead to disruptive transitions for the students, additional time and costs for busing, and inefficient staffing, etc.

When we include the funding from the MSBA, this one project – which can address the needs of the students in three schools – is cheaper than repairing the old schools. In addition, repair would not make any of the educational improvements that a new building can bring.

This building project has been governed by a collection of town officials, school officials, and other residents of the town. This has been a long, open, process with countless public meetings, community surveys, community forums, and updates from the town to all residents. The proposal is well balanced and well thought out with significant community involvement.

Building a consolidated PreK-5 school does both what is right for the future generations of Wilmington students and what is best for the taxpayers.

Please come to the town meeting on September 13th and the town vote on September 16th and vote in favor of this project on both days.

Thank you,

Stephen Turner
Member Wilmington School Committee
