Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:
WILMINGTON, MA — Francis John Mearls, fondly known as “Frank” to his family and friends, passed away on June 17, 2025.
Frank was born on Sept. 13, 1956, in Somerville, MA to the late Joseph L. and Dorothy L. (Burns) Mearls. He was raised and educated in Somerville but spent time in Wilmington at their family cottage on Grand Street.
Frank entered the United States Army on August 15, 1976. He completed active duty Training in December of that year and then transferred to the Army Reserves. He served in the Army Reserves for more than 18 years, during which he was stationed in several locations, including Panama.
Frank was the beloved husband of Maria (Bruce) Mearls. Frank and Maria met while working at Lucci’s Market in Wilmington, where a friendship soon blossomed into something more. They married on Oct. 12, 1991, and Frank was warmly welcomed into the large and loving Bruce family, where he fit right in.
Frank and Maria shared nearly 34 years together — supporting each other through both joyful moments and life’s challenges. Frank took over his family’s Grand Street property after his parents passed away, and in 1990 he built what would become their forever home. On Dec. 18, 1992, they welcomed their beloved son Frankie, who quickly became the center of their world.
Frank, Maria and Frankie shared countless good times with family and friends. Frank was a quiet, devoted dad who was always there for Frankie, no matter what. The two were truly two peas in a pod, always up for an adventure — whether it was a cross-country road trip or visiting National Parks. (Frank was by Frankie’s side when he visited his 50th park in New Mexico).
Frank and Frankie shared a deep love of nature, often spending time in the woods trimming trees, clearing walking paths or just exploring together. Frank was also a movie and cinema buff who would head out with Frankie to take in the latest releases. Through it all, Frank was a constant in his son’s life — steady, supportive and always present.
A hard worker throughout his life, Frank worked for the Teamsters Union at the Expedex Warehouse. After retiring from the Teamsters, he went to work as a custodian for the town of Wilmington. Frank took great pride in his work. He was meticulous and dependable, always going the extra mile. He worked at several locations across town and made lasting friendships wherever he went.
Frank will be fondly remembered as a devoted family man and a true friend to many. He never rushed anything and often reminded everyone, “Little by little, it will all get done.” He will be forever missed by all who knew and loved him.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife Maria Mearls and devoted son Frankie Mearls of Wilmington. He was the twin brother of the late James C. Mearls and is survived by his brother Joseph L. Mearls. He was the son-in-law of Joan and the late Chet Bruce of New Hampshire, formerly of Wilmington, “brother” of April Bruce, Lori Hodgson, Chip Bruce, Jim and Lori Ann Bruce, Scott and Brenda Bruce, Marilyn Cunningham and David Bruce. Frank is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the MSPCA at Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970
