OBITUARY: Barbara R. (Corliss) Metcalfe, 78

WILMINGTON, MA — Barbara Rae Metcalfe (Corliss), age 78, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025.

Barbara was born in Waltham, MA, on March 26, 1947; she was the cherished only daughter to the late Hubert and Barbara (Griswold) Corliss. Barbara was raised and educated in Waltham and a graduate of Waltham High School with the Class of 1965.

Barbara married “the love of her life” Raynor “Ray” Metcalfe in 1969 and bought their home in Wilmington in 1970 where they raised their family. Barbara was a very devoted wife, mother and Nana who loved her family unconditionally. Barbara was always there to encourage her children and grandchildren to do their best and could be found on every sports sideline, or in the school auditorium, and dance recital hall to cheer them on. Barbara was very proud of her family, their accomplishments, and the wonderful adults that they grew up into.

For many years Barbara was alongside her husband Ray, and they were very active in the Tewksbury/Wilmington Lodge of Elks. Barbara was a member of the Emblem Club where she was a Past President. Barbara constantly volunteered her time and talents for the club; she was very active at their fund-raising events and always helping at community events.

Prior to retiring, Barbara worked as a Reservation Specialist for Delta Airlines for many years. Throughout her time at Delta, Barbara went to their training school and continued taking classes to keep up with the latest computer updates. She had great customer service skills and was a valued employee of the company.

Barbara enjoyed many activities; in her younger years she loved to go roller skating and ice skating with her friends and later in life she was a very active and competitive bowler. Barbara was an avid reader; she enjoyed birdwatching and loved to get away to Cape Cod with Ray to relax.

Barbara will be remembered as a wonderful lady who loved her family and friends dearly; she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Raynor “Ray” Metcalfe, devoted mother of Raymond Metcalfe and his wife Courtney, loving “Nana” of Daniel Metcalfe and his wife Nicolle, Kyle Cimon and his wife Nancy, Haylee Metcalfe and her fiancé Tyler Murphy, Jocelyn Metcalfe and her boyfriend Kevin Kemp, Wyatt Metcalfe, Lyla Metcalfe, and her great-grandchildren Grayson, Blake, Danny, Carter, Lincoln, and Blake. Dear sister of the late Alan Corliss and Mark Corliss, sister-in-law of Janet Corliss, Roger and Marjorie Metcalfe, Ronald and Connie Metcalfe. Aunt of Kathy Corliss, Mark Corliss, Bobby Corliss, Chris Corliss, and Dale Corliss, as well as her Metcalfe nieces, nephews, and their families.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Wednesday, June 25th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. A Service to celebrate Barbara’s life will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, June 26th at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306.
