WILMINGTON, MA — Dorothy A. Nylund (Flynn), age 78, of North Andover, and formerly a longtime resident of Arlington, MA, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness.
Born in South Boston on April 23, 1947, Dorothy was the cherished only daughter of the late Joseph and Dorothy (Cain) Flynn. She spent her early years in South Boston before her family settled in Arlington, where she was raised with her younger brother Joey. Dorothy attended St. Agnes Elementary School and remained active in St. Agnes Church throughout her life. She played in the St. Agnes Band and was a proud member of the first graduating class of Arlington Catholic High School.
Dorothy pursued her education at Boston State College and later transferred to Cardinal Cushing College, where she earned an associate’s degree as a medical secretary. She began her career at Symmes Hospital in Arlington. She later joined the W. R. Grace Company, and eventually became an office manager at Tufts Health Plan, where she worked until her retirement. Known for her strong work ethic and professionalism, Dorothy was respected by colleagues and partners in care alike.
Dorothy met the love of her life, Tom Nylund, on a blind date at a dance at Hanscom Air Force Base – she attending with friends, he a young and handsome serviceman. They quickly formed a deep bond and were married on October 16, 1971, sharing nearly 54 wonderful years together. They made their home in Arlington, close to her family, and raised their beloved daughter, Kim.
Dorothy had a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. She loved spending time at the beach, especially in Kennebunkport, Maine – one of her favorite destinations. She and Tom enjoyed taking day trips along the New England coast, always eager to explore new places and meet new people.
A passionate Boston sports fan, Dorothy was especially devoted to the Patriots and the Celtics. She took great joy in watching her teams succeed over the years.
She remained close with her brother Joey throughout her life. With Tom and her sister-in-law Maria, they shared many holidays, dinners out, and the occasional weekend getaway.
Above all, Dorothy treasured time with her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother to Kim and her son-in-law Joe, and an adoring “Nana” to her grandchildren, Olivia and Joey, who were the light of her life. Dorothy loved attending her grandchildren’s games, competitions, and concerts, and especially hosting sleepovers at Nana and Papa’s house. She also enjoyed their family vacations, making many special memories over the years.
A woman of deep faith, Dorothy found strength and peace in prayer. She will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for those around her. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Dorothy was the beloved wife of Thomas Nylund of North Andover, devoted mother of Kim Martiniello and her husband Joe of Wilmington and loving “Nana” of Olivia and Joey Martiniello. She was the dear sister of Joseph Flynn and his wife Maria of Peabody, sister-in-law of Terry Nylund of New Mexico, and was predeceased by brothers-in-law Robert and Walter Nylund. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Family and friends are invited to Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Sunday, May 18th from 5:00–7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, May 19th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington. All are invited to gather at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Interment will follow in West Parish Cemetery, 129 Reservation Road, Andover, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, 401 Park Dr., Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215.
