STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Wilmington’s Caroline Johnston Earns PhD From University Of Southern California’s Viterbi School Of Engineering

LOS ANGELES, CA — Caroline Johnston, the daughter of Christine and Jeff Johnston of Wilmington, has been awarded a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California, Viterbi School of Engineering.

Caroline’s thesis, “Preference Elicitation in Public Health Settings: Theory, Deployment, and Qualitative Methods”, focuses on advancing optimization methodology and theory to aid human and AI decision-making in real public policy problems, focusing on applications in public health such as the COVID-19 pandemic and homelessness.

Caroline is a 2015 graduate of Wilmington High School. She graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

Caroline has joined the RAND Corporation.
