Dear Wilmington Residents,
I am writing to respectfully ask for your vote in the upcoming Select Board election this Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Fourteen years ago, my wife and I moved to Wilmington and quickly realized this was a town where community matters and those who moved away often returned to raise their families. Today we have three amazing daughters, all attending Wilmington Schools on the west side of town. I am running because I want to give back to the community and help make it the best possible place for all residents and families.
In my corporate finance career, I have managed billion-dollar budgets, built strategic plans, and negotiated complex contracts, but the most important thing that I have learned is to approach decisions objectively. To gather all the information, crunch the numbers, but most importantly make sure I have all the facts.
Every community has a fundamental responsibility to ensure that children are given the best opportunity for success, starting with a strong education. I will always support our schools, teachers, and parents. Although my children will not directly benefit from the north PreK-5 school consolidation project, I believe that supporting this school is the right choice.
I also feel strongly about increasing commercial development to reduce the residential tax rate. We have a huge opportunity to increase this tax base and give some relief to the residential taxpayers. The economic development committee’s last survey found that over 80% of residents wanted more restaurants, and over 65% wanted more retail and entertainment options, so this aligns with the wants of the community.
Additionally, we need to be proactive in building senior housing. I fully support the master facilities plan proposal for the town to convey land through a long-term lease or sale to a private entity for the development and operation of senior housing. Not only does it help solve the housing problem, but it also brings additional revenue for the town.
Regardless of who you plan to vote for, please remember to get out there and vote. There is nothing more fundamental to the constitution than the right to vote, and voter turnout for the local election is typically only in the 5% range. Every vote matters!
Sincerely,
Jacob Gearwar
