WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Veterans’ Services Department is seeking volunteers to welcome home Marine Cpl. John J. Edwinson, Jr. in the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Cpl. Edwinson, a member of Wilmington High School Class of 1938, was killed in World War II at Guadalcanal on September 25, 1942. He was buried on the battlefield by his comrades. His remains were recently identified and brought back to the United States.
Cpl. Edwinson will be laid to rest in his family plot in the Wildwood Cemetery after a service at Nichols Funeral Home at noon. He will be carried from Nichols to the gravesite, escorted by his family.
The Wilmington Veterans’ Services would like to line the route with residents holding American flags to support the Edwinson family. Residents are encouraged to bring their own flags. A limited number of flags will be available.
