Below is a press release from the Ipswich River Watershed Association:
WILMINGTON, MA — A critical infrastructure project is underway to address persistent flooding and ecological concerns in Wilmington.
Residents are invited to a public event to learn more about the planned upgrade of the culvert on Route 62 at Martin’s Brook, a key step toward building climate resilience in the region, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 6pm to 7:30pm, at Wilmington Town Hall (121 Glen Road).
The existing culvert, which carries Martin’s Brook beneath Route 62, received a “serious” condition rating in a 2024 MassDOT assessment. The structure not only worsens flooding issues around Martins Pond but also poses a barrier to fish passage and aquatic habitat connectivity. Addressing this long-standing problem is vital for the safety of the community and the health of the local ecosystem.
This event will provide an opportunity for residents, business owners, and stakeholders to hear directly from experts involved in the project. Speakers include:
- Amber Carr, Stream Continuity Program, Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration
- Paul Alunni and Valerie Gingrich, Town of Wilmington
- Bob Niccoli and Greg Gaudreau, The Engineering Corp
The discussion will be moderated by Neil Shea, Restoration Program Director at the Ipswich River Watershed Association.
Attendees will learn about the importance of upgrading the culvert, the expected benefits for flood mitigation and fish passage, and the next steps in the project. There will also be time for audience questions and feedback
This initiative is supported by the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program, which helps communities prepare for climate change impacts.
