OBITUARY: William “Bill” Hird, 78

WILMINGTON, MA — William Hird, “Bill”, age 78, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 28, 2025.

Bill was born on March 30, 1946, in Boston, MA; he was the son of the late Ralph and Dorothy (Merett) Hird. Bill was raised and educated in South Boston.

Bill married his loving wife, Marilyn A. (Lynch) Hird, and they settled in Wilmington, where they raised their three daughters, Janice, Cheryl, and Lori. Bill and Marilyn lived in Wilmington for many years before relocating to Dunedin, Florida after retirement. They enjoyed the beautiful weather and the beach for several years. Eventually, Bill and Marilyn returned to Wilmington to be closer to their children and grandchildren, but they continued their love of the ocean at Hampton Beach every summer.

Bill worked as a custodian for the Town of Wilmington for many years; he mostly worked at the Woburn St. and North Intermediate Schools. Bill enjoyed working with his co-workers and loved to see the kids.

Bill will be remembered for his love of the Boston Red Sox; he often greeted people with “Go Red Sox!” Bill watched countless games and wore his Red Sox hat and shirts proudly to show his support. He will always be known as a “Boston guy”; from his love of sports to his Dunkin Donuts coffee and chocolate, he was always proud to be from Boston.

Bill was the beloved husband of Marilyn A. (Lynch) Hird, devoted father of Janice Hill & her husband Bruce of Salem, NH; Cheryl Baranow & her late husband Paul of Wilmington, and Lori Abbey of Hampton, NH, loving “Papa” of Katie, Lauren, Erin, Chrissy, Billy, Caitlin, Meghan, and Shannon, “Great Papa” of Jacob, Jackson, Kylie, Theo, Hudson, Otto, Evan, the late Aubrey, Nora, Lily, and Charlotte. Bill was the dear brother of John Hird & his wife Virginia, Michael Hird & his late wife Betty, the late Richard Hird & his wife Terry, the late Ralph Hird & his wife Dee, Jeanne McDonald, Patty Reeves & her late husband Richie, and Susie Kelley. Bill is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Thursday, January 30th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Memorial donations in Bill’s name many be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
