Below is an obituary from Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home:
YORK, ME — David C. Vokey was born in Malden, MA to parents Charlie and Nancy Vokey in February 1952. At the age of 72 (or 18 being a leap year baby, something he loved to share) passed away on January 3rd, 2025 due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was and always will be one in a million. He grew up in Wilmington, MA and graduated from Wilmington High School where he excelled in football, track, theater. Dave then joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served as an engineman on the U.S.S Iwo Jima. After his time in the service he spent many years in a career he loved. He worked as a field mechanic repairing forklifts, achieved certifications in many specialties, and was a member of the American Institute of Plant Engineers. He enjoyed sharing stories of his time spent working in Brazil.
Dave had many passions throughout his life. He was a family man through and through, and was a father figure and role model to so many in his years. He loved trains, visiting round houses, and would frequently visit the tracks to relax and watch the railcars go by. He was well known throughout his community spending many years involved in York football, wrestling, and the Boosters. He enjoyed spending his time rebuilding classic cars, including a 61 Starfire, 70 Chevelle, 23 T-Bucket, 67 Chevelle, 67 GTO, and a 65 Ford pick-up. He loved riding motorcycles, fixing things (he really could fix anything, whether it needed it or not), tinkering with anything that had an engine, making a batch of his famous Chop Suey, going to go-kart races as an honorary member of Worster’s Automotive Racing Team, and he always loved a good UFC or Jerry Springer fight.
His top priority was always his family. He would literally do anything for the ones he loved. Some of his favorite things included taking his grandchildren for tractor rides, telling his original stories that included Griffles, Snipes, Fred the Polar Bear, Wally the Whale, and the Ow-Wow Bird, and spending time with his wife, “the boss”, Cindy.
Dave had the absolute biggest heart which he loved to share with anyone that crossed his path. He gave the best hugs and always had a kind word or smile waiting for you. He was an avid story teller, and his sense of humor and ability to connect with people will be sorely missed by many. We hope there is an endless supply of malted milk balls, Kraft mac & cheese, and Diet A&W wherever you are.
Dave was predeceased by his parents Charles and Nancy Vokey and sisters Denise Patterson and Donna Pennachi. He is survived by his loving wife Cindy and children Eric Vokey (Keri), Jessica Williams (Jason), Kyle Vokey (Caitlin), Ryan Vokey (Carly), Tom McLin (Brittany), Kelly McLin, and “brothers” Ed, Drew, and Bill. He was a proud “Papa Voke” to nine grandchildren who were the light of his life: Alex, Eva, Nick, Liliana, Lily, Nora, Calla, Boden and Wyatt. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the York High School Athletic Boosters.
