Below is a press release from the Shawsheen Tech:
BILLERICA, MA — Shawsheen Valley Technical High School is proud to announce that 85 seniors from the Class of 2025 have earned the prestigious John and Abigail Adams Scholarship. This remarkable achievement was celebrated during a special assembly held just before the winter break.
The recipients were surprised with the announcement the morning of the ceremony, receiving an email requesting their presence in the auditorium. Once gathered, Guidance Director Jim Carlson kicked off the event with a brief quiz on John and Abigail Adams. After sparking some curiosity and anticipation, he revealed the purpose of the assembly: to recognize them as high achievers, and scholarship awardees.
In a moment of pride and celebration, each recipient was presented with their official notification letters from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The ceremony was attended by Principal Jessica Cook, Academic Director Danica Johnston, Vocational Director Dave Norkiewicz, and Superintendent Tony McIntosh, who joined in honoring the students’ achievements.
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship is a highly regarded merit-based award that provides up to eight semesters of tuition credit for undergraduate education at Massachusetts state colleges and universities. Recipients qualify by excelling on the 10th-grade Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) exams.
Eligibility criteria include achieving an Advanced score in one of the three core MCAS subjects—English Language Arts, Mathematics, or STE (Biology, Chemistry, Introductory Physics, or Technology/Engineering)—along with a Proficient or Advanced score in the other two. Additionally, recipients must rank in the top 25% of their school district based on their combined MCAS scores.
