WILMINGTON, MA — Joseph F. McCarthy, “Joe”, age 103, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 8, 2025.
Joe was born on July 24, 1921, in Somerville, MA; he was the cherished son of the late Joseph L. and Mary (Corbet) McCarthy. Joe was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School.
Following graduation, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 29, 1942. He served during WWII, where he earned the Bronze Star for his heroic service. Joe was stationed in Oklahoma, where he met his wife Marilyn (Damron) McCarthy. Joe and Marilyn were married on May 6, 1944, and moved back to Massachusetts after Joe was honorably discharged on December 9, 1945. They spent several years in Somerville with their three children, James, Frances and Robert, before settling in Wilmington in 1961.
Joe and Marilyn loved to travel and spent time with the Organ Club Square Dancing. They were active in the Wilmington community and enjoyed the activities at the Wilmington Senior Center.
Joe was the beloved husband of the late Marilyn McCarthy, devoted father of James J. McCarthy and his wife Christine of Billerica, the late Frances A. “Sissy” Dalton and Robert P. McCarthy and his late wife Linda of Ashburnham. Joe was the loving grandfather of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rt. 62), Wilmington, on Tuesday, January 14th from 2:00-4:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St. (Rte. 38), Wilmington, on Wednesday, January 15th at 12:00 noon. (Please go directly to church.) Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington.
Memorial donations in Joe’s name may be made to Local Heroes, P.O. Box 536, Wilmington, MA 01887.
