Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:
WILMINGTON, MA — John Garfield Bishop, age 81, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, at the Veterans Hospital in West Roxbury.
John was born on March 3, 1943, in Waltham, MA; he was the dear son of the late Reginald and August “Augie” (Alger) Bishop. John was raised and educated in Wilmington and a graduate of Wilmington High School with the Class of 1961.
Following High School, John was ordered to active duty into the United States Navy on August 4, 1965, during the Vietnam War. John continued to serve the Country for over 38 years with the Navy; he was stationed aboard several vessels including the USS Orion and received several commendations for his bravery. John had a very distinguished and accomplished career with the Navy; he had a brilliant mind and brought a lot of positive ideas through his engineering and communications skills.
John married “the love of his life” Judith Garrett over 58 years ago. The couple lived in Billerica, where they raised two wonderful sons, but later moved back to their hometown of Wilmington. John was very devoted to his family; throughout the years he and Judy spent many years with family and friends celebrating holidays and vacations, making memories to last a lifetime.
In his spare time, John loved to go boating, he enjoyed the challenge of working on cars, and most of all he used his engineering mind to design and build things; John was a “jack of all trades” and could fix just about anything.
John is survived by his beloved wife Judith (Garrett) Bishop, his dear sons Brian Bishop and wife Kristen of Pelham, NH and Keith Bishop of Wilmington. He was the loving grandfather of Hailey, Adam, and Jared. John is further survived by a loving family of siblings, “in-laws”, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Thursday, January 9th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude with interment and Military Honors at the Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
