OBITUARY: Roy J. Bettano, 94

Below is an obituary from Vertuccio Smith & Vazza Funeral Home:

REVERE, MA — Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Funeral Mass in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., Revere on Friday, January 3rd at 11:00 a.m., for Roy J. Bettano, who passed away on December 22nd at the age of 94, a week before his 95th birthday. Interment and repast will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery 302 Elm St., Everett.

Roy is the son of John and Catherine (London) Bettano and was the oldest of their children, the late Victoria Sweeney and the late James Bettano.

Roy enjoyed many years working as a baker at Green & Freeman bakery while a resident of East Boston and Revere, and later relocated to Wilmington, MA, where he lived for the past 47 years.

Roy loved life and had a passion for living. This passion was expressed in many ways, the years of enjoyment with family and friends at the Orient Heights Yacht Club, followed by weekly parties around the backyard pool in Wilmington in later years. He was also a great swimmer and diver. Roy was always ready to help his family and friends, enthusiastically doing whatever he could to be there for them.

Roy’s passion for life is also reflected in his appreciation of good food and he was known for his seafood and secret recipe eggplant parmigiana. He was also an avid sports fan, following multiple sports, teams, players and statistics with great enthusiasm and accuracy. He seldom lost a sports discussion. So too was his ability with cards especially whist and poker. It was always a sure win to be on Roy’s team.

Roy is the husband of devoted wife Phyllis (Foresta) Bettano, who was the love of his life for 73 years, and whom he cherished without reservation, and loving daughter Joanne and her husband Robert Fortunato of Atkinson NH., his son John Bettano and granddaughter Alicia Bettano from Merrimack, MA.

Roy had a long life, well lived, and all the many people who knew him over the 94 years feel that they were better for having known him.

In lieu of flowers kindly donate in Roy’s honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
