OBITUARY: Mary M. Boylen, 94

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Mary M. Boylen, age 94, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home on December 23, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born in Malden, MA, on June 6, 1930; she was raised in Cambridge, MA, by her beloved grandmother and her dear aunts. Mary was educated in Cambridge and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School.

Mary met her husband George Boylen, Jr., while she was “vacationing” at her aunt’s cottage on Grove Ave. in Wilmington, on Silver Lake. George was a handsome young lifeguard at the lake when they met, and she was a beautiful city girl who caught his eye; the couple were soon inseparable and later married in 1952.

George and Mary lived out of State for a few years before settling back in his hometown of Wilmington where they raised three wonderful children. Mary was a stay-at-home mom who was always busy doing something for the kids or attending their school and sporting events.

When not with her family, Mary was very active in her community and beyond. She was always giving of her time and talents to volunteer for various charities or organizations. Mary enjoyed volunteering for the St. Thomas Charities including the St. Thomas outreach program and through the church she along with a group went to various facilities to feed the less fortunate or do dinners for patients with serious medical issues and their families.

Mary was a member of the Wilmington Community Fund for over 20 years and loved to help with various fundraisers for the community. One of Mary’s favorite clubs was the Wilmington Garden club where she enjoyed socializing and going to nursing homes to help the residents create flower arrangements; this brought Mary a lot of joy that she could share her love of flowers with others.

In her spare time, Mary loved to travel around the world with family and friends; she had an outgoing personality, and she loved meeting new people. Mary also enjoyed a day at the beach, especially Hampton Beach in New Hampshire where she could be found soaking up the sun and relaxing in her chair.

Mary will be fondly remembered as a special lady who would do anything to help anyone. She had a soft spot for animals and loved her rescue dog Koda. Mary touched so many people throughout her life in her kind and caring ways; she loved her family and friends unconditionally and will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary was the beloved wife of the late George W. Boylen Jr., devoted mother of George Boylen III of East Kingston, NH, Rosemary Haley of Tewksbury, and Kathy Boylen of Wilmington, she was a dear sister-in-law of Jeanne Crupi of Reading and Laurie Lanni of Southbridge. Mary is also survived by her very close friends who she loved so much Barbara Doucette, Janice Baldwin, Bernadette Bennett and Kathleen Bennett. She is further survived by many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, MA, on Sunday, December 29th from 2:00-5:00 p.m. All are welcome to gather at the Funeral Home on Monday, December 30th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA.
