OBITUARY: Mary Elaine Medeiros, 79

Below is an obituary from Goundrey Dewhirst Funeral Home:

SALEM, NH — Mary Elaine Medeiros, 79, of Salem, NH, formerly of Wilmington, MA, died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 10, 2024 after a brief illness.

Mary was born on November 18, 1944 in Orlando, FL to Anthony and Anne (Gavin) Carreiro and told fond stories of her childhood in Dorchester, MA. She collected many friends on her journey through life – from Nova Scotia for college and back to Massachusetts where she worked as a teacher and reading specialist, retiring as the Director of Religious Education for St. Dorothy’s Church in Wilmington, where she was a beloved leader and community member.

Mary is survived by Richard, the love of her life and husband of 47 years, and their three daughters and families: Dorothy Wisdom and husband Scott of Norwell, MA; Karen Boyle and husband Michael of Paxton, MA; and Catherine Langlais and husband Jason of Salem, NH. She was the world’s best Grammie to Lydia, Cecelia, Rosalie, Emily, Lucy, Michael, Amelia and Gavin. She is also survived by her brother Frank Carreiro and wife Maureen of Wilmington, MA and many beloved extended family members and friends.

Mary had a way of making everyone she met feel special. We will always admire her profound faith in God which gave her strength and purpose. That faith, combined with her whole-hearted kindness and generosity, amplified joy for all who knew her. In her memory, we’ll continue her favorite traditions including baking baby Jesus’ birthday cake on Christmas Eve and bunny cakes on Easter. We’ll be unabashedly silly, smile at strangers, and say “Super!” more often. We love you Mary, Mom and Grammie. You lived your life with grace and we take comfort in the knowledge that you have a special seat in heaven surrounded by love.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday October 17, 2024 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Goundrey Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street Salem, NH. A Funeral Mass will be on Friday October 18 at 10:00 am at Mary Queen of Peace Church, 200 Lawrence Road Salem, NH. (family and guests are asked to please meet directly at the church). Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery Salem, NH. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude place Memphis, TN., 38105.
