Town Manager Slagle Highlights Important Fall Dates, Including Special Town Meeting To Address MBTA Communities Act On December 7

Below is the “From The Manager’s Desk” column from the latest Town Topics Newsletter.

As we come to the end of the summer of 2024, I would like to bring forward some important dates and information to the residents of Wilmington for this fall.

MSBA PROJECT

First, on October 8, 2024, the Wilmington School Building Committee will be taking a vote on the preferred option to move forward with the MSBA on an elementary school project here in town. The members of the committee have worked very hard to reach this state and have done extra outreach to the community in the form of a survey flyer that was mailed to residents in early September. I would encourage everyone to tune in to the committee meeting.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING

The Town will be holding a Special Town Meeting on Saturday, December 7, 2024 to take up business that was not completed at the Annual Town Meeting. Specifically, residents will be asked to consider amending the Zoning By-law and Zoning District Map to create a new MBTA Communities Multi-family Overlay District, which was referred back to the Planning Board. The state regulations give the Town until the end of December to be in compliance with the MBTA Zoning law, so that will be one of the warrant articles up for consideration in December. Please put that date on your calendars.

ROADWAY PROJECTS

As folks will no doubt notice, there are quite a few notable roadway improvement projects going forward around Town. In early September,  the Butters Row Bridge was closed for demolition and construction of a new, modern replacement bridge. Also, MassDOT continues to work on the Woburn Street/Lowell Street intersection and has had occasional night paving in the area to accommodate that project. There is also enhanced work by MassDOT occurring at the Woburn Street Bridge which includes roadway/sidewalk improvements and bridge beam and bridge deck repairs.

WHITE GOODS

Please note that the fee to recycle white goods, CRTs and mattresses will increase to $25 as of October 15, 2024. The last day to purchase a $10 sticker will be Friday, October 11, 2024 by 4:00 p.m. After that time, residents will contact Casella Waste directly at 1-800-CASELLA (1-800-227-3552) to purchase a sticker for $25 per item.

OTHER REMINDERS

A reminder that Town Hall will be closed on the following dates:
October 14 – Columbus Day
November 11 – Veterans’ Day
November 28 & 29 – Thanksgiving Holiday
December 25 – Christmas

Finally, I would like to thank all department heads and staff for their hard work and collaboration. The Town would not be able to run as smoothly and efficiently as it does without their dedication. This month, given all the various projects listed above, I would like to highlight the DPW staff. Kudos to Jamie Magaldi (Public Works Director), Joe Lobao (Deputy Public Works Director), Paul Alunni (Town Engineer) and all the clerks, engineers, supervisors and foremen, and all staff for the incredible work they do each day to improve the lives of Town residents!
