NEW STEW: Watch October Episode Of WCTV’s ‘Book Stew’ Featuring Author E. Dolores Johnson

Below is an announcement from Wilmington Community Television’s “Book Stew:”

Welcome to the 130th Book Stew episode, and to the most troubling true story that’s ever been told in a decade of the show!

Boston area resident E. Dolores Johnson joins me to share her family memoir, Say I’m Dead. As the child of a white mother and a Black father who married in 1943 (24 years before the Supreme Court’s Loving decision, which set aside the prohibition against interracial marriage in 15 states), Dolores grew up with no knowledge of her mother’s family. After seeing the TV show Roots, she decided to try to fill in the missing white half of her family tree, only to find out that her parents had fled from Indiana (national headquarters of the Ku Klux Klan) to Buffalo, rather than risk being arrested for breaking the law. Knowing that her family would not give permission for their daughter to marry a Black man, Ella Jackson abruptly disappeared from their lives.

36 years later, this would change, thanks to Dolores’ determination.

Dolores is very candid about the devastating impact of the laws against miscegenation, or “race mixing”, on her and on her family. Lamar’s expertise and knowledge of his audience create a dynamic story of a high school football prospect, Cade, whose private school and inner city neighborhood constantly clash. Cade’s visit to a creepy pawnshop triggers a series of alarming events, one involving a New England Patriots Superbowl ring.

Eileen MacDougall is the host/producer of 125+ episodes of Book Stew, a web series and podcast originating in 2013, featuring every variety of authors, illustrators, poets, and playwrights, plus a cat that survived a tornado and lived to write about it!
