OBITUARY: Rosa A. (Varas) Zullo, 70

WILMINGTON, MA — Rosa A. (Varas) Zullo, age 70, of Chelmsford, formerly a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away suddenly on September 23, 2024.

Rosa was born on February 17, 1954, in San Felipe, Chile; she was the daughter of the late Temistocles Varas and Leontina Erazo. Rosa was raised in Chile and moved to the United States in her early 20s.

Rosa worked as an Assistant Co-Councilor of Culture for the Consulate of Chile in Boston. Rosa was very dedicated to her job, and she was a pillar in the Boston Chilean Community for more than two decades; she loved helping people from her homeland and was instrumental in helping Chilean children receive life-saving medical procedures at the Boston children’s hospital/Dana Farber.

Rosa’s family was most important to her. She was a wonderful mother to her only child, Leonardo Zullo; he was the “light of her life” and she was extremely proud to be his Mom. Rosa also had a special bond with her only brother Peter (Memo) Varas and his family. She spent so many holidays and special occasions with them.

Rosa’s passion was organizing events for the Chilean Community which brought everyone together to celebrate, connect and enjoy the traditions of Chile. She was always willing to help others in need, and spending time with her family and friends.

Rosa was the devoted mother of Leonardo P. Zullo of Chelmsford, stepmother to Nadia Barsamian of Naples, FL, dear sister of Peter (Memo) Varas & his wife Diana Garcia of Nashua, NH, loving “Tia” of Arianna Varas, Tanama Varas, and Kristian Varas, dear cousin to Leontina (Leo) Erazo and Hugo Humberto (Beto) Erazo Fernandez. She was a niece, aunt, cousin, godmother and a dear friend to so many in Chile and the U.S.

Family and friends will gather at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, October 3rd at 9:30 a.m. immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Dorothy’s Church, Main St., (Rte. 38), Wilmington at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 2nd from 4:00 -8:00 pm.

Memorial donations in Rosa’s name may be made to Boston’s Children Hospital, 401 Park Drive, Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215.
