Public Health Museum Invites Wilmington Residents To 30th Anniversary Celebration, September 28-30

Below is a press release from the Public Health Museum:

TEWKSBURY, MA — As part of its 30th Anniversary celebration, the Public Health Museum (365 East Street, Tewksbury) in Massachusetts is announcing a series of events for the community, sharing the past, present, and future of public health. The museum, founded in 1994 by public health professionals as a way to educate and inform the public about the importance of public health in our everyday lives, has consistently worked to bring new and interesting exhibits, programming, and outreach events to the community.

Starting with a Community Health Fair on Saturday, September 28, free health screenings and demonstrations will be conducted. Stop by and check your blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and vision. Learn about animal safety and how to keep your backyard chickens healthy, learn how to use an EPI pen and naloxone to save a life. We’ll also have the UMass Lowell Mobile Health Unit on site. Hear lightning health talks by local experts and take a self-guided tour of the museum to see the recently unveiled HIV/AIDs exhibit.

On Sunday, September 29, take a walk along the Middlesex Canal and learn about a hidden smallpox cemetery. Explore the history of smallpox and how the disease – the only epidemic that has been fully eradicated – wiped out whole families in the 1800s until a vaccine was developed. Registration is available on the museum’s website.

And on Monday, September 30, join the Massachusetts Public Health Association-the champion for public health in the Commonwealth-as they discuss community-driven policy change that fosters conditions for people to achieve their full health potential where they live, work, and play. Learn about health equity with Executive Director Carlene Pavlos and Ana Hidalgo of MPHA. 4PM-6PM and open to the public.
