OBITUARY: Doris Emery, 99

BEVERLY, MA — Doris Emery, known affectionately as Dodie, passed away August 26, 2024 in Beverly, MA, at the age of 99. Born December 17, 1924 on Union Road, PEI Canada, Doris was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Essery.

Doris’s life was marked by her indomitable spirit and zest for life, which were evident from her early years growing up on a farm on PEI. Born deaf, she was sent to Boston at age 10 to pursue her education at the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and later at Brookline High School.

Doris married James Emery and settled in Wilmington, MA where they raised their three daughters. After Jim’s death at age 57, Doris embarked on numerous adventures, including driving cross country with her Jack Russell Auggie, traveling to China, building her home in Maine with her son-in-law Dennis, and eventually settling on Cape Cod with her daughter Patti and wife Suzanne. Some of her best times were with her daughter ElizaBeth in Gloucester where her social life was second to none! Her love for life extended to all the children and pets she lovingly cared for over the years.

Doris was a member of the Grace Chapel Deaf Ministry in Lexington, MA and attended the Annisquam Village Church in Gloucester, MA. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, often referring to Jesus as her “best friend.”

She is survived by her daughters, ElizaBeth Emery of Gloucester, MA, Jane Emery Downey and husband Dennis of East Parsonsfield, ME, and Patricia Emery and wife Suzanne Miller of East Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA along with many beloved nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 9th, 2024
at 1:00pm at the Annisquam Village Church, 820 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA. For those unable to attend, the service will be on Zoom (annisquamvillagechurch.org) under Church Zoom Link.
