WILMINGTON, MA — 16% of Wilmington voters (2,964 out of 18,382) participated in the State Primary held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.
On the Democratic ballot, the only contested race was for the Middlesex North Register of Deeds. Register employee Karen Cassella received 811 votes, followed by former Lowell Mayor Sokhary Chau (492 votes) and attorney Joe Ready (367 votes). When all the votes were tallied from the other nine communities, Wilmington’s order reflected the overall order. Cassella will run unopposed in November as there is no Republican candidate. Longtime incumbent Dick Howe did not seek re-election.
On the Republican ballot, the only contested race was for U.S. Senate. U.S. marine veteran and trial attorney John Deaton (586 votes) was victorious over Robert Antonellis (451 votes) and Ian Cain (53 votes), both in Wilmington and throughout the entire state. Deaton will move on to challenge Senator Elizabeth Warren in November.
1,829 Democratic ballots were filled out, compared to 1,122 Republican ballots and 13 Libertarian ballots. This factors in mail-in voting, early in-person voting, and day-of voting at the polls.
