OBITUARY: John T. F. Krey, 88

NORTH READING, MA — On September 3, 2024, the world lost a remarkable soul, John T. F. Krey, who departed to be with the Lord he so deeply cherished. John’s legacy lives on through his beloved wife of 46 years, Carlene Messina Krey, and their three children: Lt Col (Ret) Timothy Krey and his wife, Laurel, Christoph Krey, and Stephanie Durgee and her husband, John. His five grandchildren, Colin, Lucy, Deacon, Rose, and Willow, were the bright stars in his life, and their Papa will be profoundly missed.

John’s devotion to his faith was unwavering. His life was a testament to his deep love for Jesus Christ and his commitment to Pinewood Lutheran Church in Burlington, MA, where he served with distinction as President of the Congregation and Chairman of the Elders. Known for his profound Bible knowledge, John spent countless hours teaching and guiding others through Bible studies. His daily practice of sharing devotionals and prayers with his family was a cornerstone of his life, exemplifying the Christian values he so passionately lived.

A lifelong educator, John’s love for teaching was evident in every aspect of his career. He dedicated 33 years to teaching Chemistry, Biology, and Health Sciences at Wilmington High School. He was the heart and soul of the Science Club, renowned for its magical and educational shows that delighted students throughout the Wilmington area. His influence extended beyond the classroom; he inspired many as a Chemistry Lab instructor at St. Anselm College and as a tutor for students from prestigious schools like Philips Academy Andover and Andover High School. His dedication earned him accolades, including nominations for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. John held three degrees, a BA in Education from Boston University, a Masters in Education with a specialty in Chemistry from Northeastern University, and a Masters in Chemistry from Bowling Green State University.

John’s innovative teaching methods, particularly his approach using patterns, culminated in his published work, The Structure of Knowledge Using Natural Patterns: An Educational Guide for Educators (Dorrance Publishing, 2020). His work has left a lasting impact on the field of education, shaping the careers of many students who went on to become doctors, engineers, and ministers.

His service to his country was also noteworthy. During his time at the U.S. Army Chemical Research and Development Laboratory, John contributed to critical research on antidotes for chemical agents, showcasing his dedication to both science and national service.

Born on February 8, 1936, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, John was the seventh of sixteen children born to Reverend Rudolf E.M. Krey and Gertrude Emilie (Behrens) Krey. John was the dear brother of the late Ruth Krey Stark and her late husband Bill; Esther Krey Lowrey and her late husband Albert; the late Matthias R.L. Krey and his wife Joan; the late Johanna I.M. Krey; the late Phoebe Krey Lanzoni M.D. and her late husband Vincent; the late Tirzah M. F. Krey; the late Mirjam Krey Catellier and her late husband Claude Catellier M.D.; Rhoda U. Morris and her late husband, James; Priscilla Krey Loring and her late husband Charles; Rev. Peter D.W. Krey PhD and his wife Nora; the late James H. J. Krey; Rev. Andrew E.V. Krey and his wife Sally; Rev. Philip D.W. Krey PhD and his wife Rene; Shem G.W. Krey and his wife Alice Kern; and Susanna H Krey and her husband Charles Miller. His extended family, filled with cherished nieces, nephews, and their children, spans across the world, each carrying a piece of his spirit.

John’s memory will be honored during visiting hours on Sunday, September 8th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington, MA. His funeral service will be held at Pinewood Lutheran Church, 24 Wilmington Road, Burlington, MA, on Monday, September 9th, at 10 a.m., with interment to follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Andover, MA. A luncheon celebrating his life and legacy will be held at Pinewood Lutheran Church after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Pinewood Lutheran Church or to Care Dimensions Hospice Care, whose compassionate care supported John in his final days.

John T. F. Krey’s life was a beacon of faith, education, and love. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
