OBITUARY: Stephen James Shay, 64

Below is an obituary from Nichols Funeral Home:

WILMINGTON, MA — Stephen J. Shay, age 64, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Stephen was born on March 7, 1960; he was the dear son of the late Albert W. and Helen T. (Prescott) Shay. Stephen was special from the start; he was raised in a loving family in Wilmington who always encouraged him to do his best. He had an amazing personality and an outgoing spirit; he was born to entertain.

Stephen was that social butterfly who never met a stranger; he attended Camp Forty Acres in Wilmington for many summers and made countless friends with his fellow campers as well as the staff who loved him.

Stephen had many talents; he enjoyed all kinds of music and loved to sing every chance he got. He took up playing the organ; he was always willing to learn new songs and perform for family and friends.

Stephen was also very artistic; he loved to color and draw. Stephen saw colors in unique ways and could create beautiful paintings and drawings that were simply amazing.

Stephen enjoyed showing off his athletic ability as he participated in the Special Olympics for many years with his mom always on the sideline cheering him on and encouraging him to do his best.

Stephen’s family was most important to him; he looked forward to family cookouts, holidays, and vacations; especially trips to Newfound Lake where he loved being in the water. When Stephen got older, he loved to go out for dinner and a beer with his “best friends”; it made him feel special.

Stephen will be fondly remembered for his colorful personality, his huge heart, and his beautiful soul; he accepted everyone as his friend and truly showed unconditional love to all. He will forever be missed by all who loved him.

Stephen was the beloved brother of Susan Shay and her husband Paul Coolidge of Hudson, MA and Michael Shay of Wilmington, MA. He is further survived by his cousins, in-laws and dear friends.

Family and friends will gather for a Graveside Service on Saturday, September 7th at 1:00 p.m. in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington, MA. (Please use last entrance off of Wildwood Street).

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Stephen’s memory to the Special Olympics of Massachusetts, 512 Forest Street, Marlborough, MA 01752.
