OBITUARY: Sylvia A. “Cissy” (Bannon) Smith, 81

WILMINGTON, MA — Sylvia Ann (Bannon) Smith, “Cissy”, age 81, a long-time resident of Wilmington, passed away on August 21, 2024, at the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading.

Cissy was born on June 16, 1943, in Norwood, MA; she was the cherished daughter of the late Edward F. and Margaret M. (Harrison) Bannon. Cissy was raised in Walpole and graduated from Walpole High School.

Cissy married her husband, Edward W. Smith, on September 24, 1966; they settled in Wilmington, where they raised their three children, Kimberly, Michael, and Patricia. Cissy was a wonderful wife and mother; she enjoyed spending time with her family.

The joy of Cissy’s life came when she became a “Grammy”. She cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren often attending their sporting events, school functions, holidays, and playing cards, including “Crazy Eights.” Cissy had a special bond with each of her grandchildren and they have many memories of great times spent with her.

Cissy worked at Analog Devices for over twenty-eight years. She worked in the kitting department as a group leader. Cissy made several friendships with her co-workers and continued to attend luncheons with her friends for many years following her retirement.

In her spare time, Cissy enjoyed traveling; she looked forward to her visits at “Camp” in Stark, NH with her family. She loved visiting the beach, especially York Beach, where she spent time relaxing and enjoying the sun. Cissy loved to go out with her Mother-in-law, Lily May; they had so much fun going to bingo with sister-in-law Betty and neighbor Irene.

Cissy will be remembered as an avid reader; she loved reading all types of books, including mysteries. She was a history buff who loved reading about historical events and places. Cissy enjoyed watching T.V., especially old movies and true crime shows.

Cissy was the beloved wife of Edward W. Smith, devoted mother of Kimberly J. Ripaldi & her husband Carlo of Hudson, NH, Michael E. Smith & his wife Kelly of Wilmington, and Patricia E. Dunham & her husband Sean of Colorado, loving “Grammy” of Carlo “Cal” Ripaldi, Lily Ripaldi, Kayla Smith, Kassidy Smith, Iain Dunham, Ronan Dunham, and Tyler Ripaldi & his wife Shelby, along with their children Lylah and Baylee, dear sister of Margie & Sparky O’Neil, Janice Godino, Fran & Dick Cacciagrani, Tommy & Claudette Bannon, Maricia Rasicot & her late husband James, the late Teddy Bannon, the late Michael Bannon & his wife Chrissy Bannon, the late Jackie Bannon and the late Alice Bannon. Cissy is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for Visitation at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Sunday, August 25th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 4:00 p.m.

Memorial donations in Cissy’s name may be made to the Sawtelle Hospice House, 320 Haverhill Street, Reading, MA 01867.
