TRAFFIC ADVISORY (UPDATE): Lowell St.-Woburn St. Intersection Project, Woburn St. Water Main Replacement Project To Lead To Detours

Below is an UPDATED announcement from the Wilmington Department of Public Works:

WILMINGTON, MA — Please be advised that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s (MassDOT) contractor, MDR Construction Co., Inc. (MDR), will be continuing to work on both the north and south legs of Woburn Street as part of ongoing intersection improvements. As a reminder, this Project received $5.46M in Federal and State funding through the State’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) and includes various phases for corridor widening, dedicated left turn lanes, utility/drainage improvements, new mast arms/signals, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and crosswalks.

MassDOT’s contractor, MDR, has requested a full closure (for safety purposes) of the south leg of Woburn Street at the Lowell Street intersection potentially starting August 12, 2024 from 7am – 3pm, depending on the completion schedule of Verizon preparation work. During this phase, Industrial Way will be used as a detour as shown in the below “Detour 2” plan.

The next phase of work will include work on the north Woburn Street leg of the Lowell Street intersection potentially starting later in August. This phase will include a closure of Woburn Street from Lowell Street to Perry Ave. During this closure, traffic will be diverted to West Street as shown below in the “Detour 3” plan.

8/9/24 UPDATE: During both phases, unrelated water main replacement work on Woburn Street between Concord Street and Federal Street will be underway. The detour for this project is shown in green on both plans below. This detour utilizes Federal Street and West Street to accommodate work crew safety between 7am and 3pm. This Town water main project is funded by ARPA funding.

Electronic copies of the plan are available in the Wilmington DPW Engineering Division Office located at 121 Glen Road (Wilmington Town Hall) and can be provided upon request by calling 978-658-4499.
