REGISTER OF DEEDS RACE: Governor Healey & Lt. Governor Driscoll Endorse Sokhary Chau

Below is a press release from the campaign of Sokhary Chau. Chau is running for the Middlesex North Register of Deeds, which covers Wilmington:

LOWELL, MA —  Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll have announced their endorsement of former Lowell Mayor and current City Councilor Sokhary Chau for the Democratic nomination for Register of Deeds.

“As a former mayor and Lowell City Councilor, Sokhary Chau knows what it takes to bring people together and take action to improve their lives. As Middlesex North Register of Deeds, Sokhary will leverage his experience working alongside leaders at every level of government to improve Registry operations, make services more accessible, and provide constituent services for all residents,” read a joint statement by Healey and Driscoll.

“I’m incredibly grateful to have earned Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor Driscoll’s endorsement,” said Chau. “I am running for this position to help as many people as possible, which is a priority I know this administration shares. Should I be fortunate enough to win this September, I look forward to continuing to work with our state’s leaders to protect home ownership and improve people’s lives.”

Chau is a native of Cambodia, immigrating to the United States with his mother and six siblings after his father, a captain in the Cambodian Army, was executed by the Khmer Rouge. He went on to attend Lowell Public Schools, Phillips Academy Andover, and Macalester College before starting Merrimack Mortgage Company net-branch, with his wife, Somong. Sokhary and Somong reside in Lowell with their two sons, Philip and Matthew.

Chau was elected to the Lowell City Council in 2019, before becoming the first Cambodian-American mayor in United States history. During his time in public service, Chau’s priorities include supporting high-quality, inclusive education, promoting economic and community development, and expanding green spaces and environmental stewardship programs.

If elected, Chau has pledged to leverage his experience working with local, state, and federal elected officials to secure additional funding for the Registry, increase accessibility to and expand the Registry’s services, invest in new technology to better safeguard residents’ information, and conduct outreach across Middlesex North’s ten communities.

Chau will be on the ballot in the Massachusetts Democratic Primary on Tuesday, September 3.
