Below is a recent speech from George Ferdinand, an Independent candidate for the 19th Middlesex House district, which encompasses all of Wilmington and a portion of Tewksbury:
Ladies and Gentlemen, and esteemed members of the Massachusetts 19th Middlesex District,
Today, I George Ferdinand announce my candidacy as the INDEPENDENT candidate for state representative of our 19th district. I am here not as part of the entrenched two-party system, but as an advocate for you, the people. In the current political landscape, it has become evident that the two-party system is BROKEN. It often serves party platforms, not the people it is suppose to represent. As the INDEPENDENT, I pledge to work for you, with constituent services of the upmost priority.
I am committing to a promise of term limits. I believe in the essence of public service, not career politics. That’s why I will sign a pledge to serve no more than three terms, made official by a notary public. I will send it to the local media outlets this month so they can choose to publish it or not. My focus is on bringing about change, not settling into the comforts of a long-term political career.
Let’s talk about the Right to Shelter Law. It was written and passed in 1983 for years it worked as intended but as time went by waste and abuse crept in. The Law had an indefinite time limit and the numbers on the roll grew. To a point in the last year where it’s obviously outrageous. In the last 6 months because of we the people the time length has been reduced to 9 months and a numbers cap. I will fight for residency requirement and the length to be cut to 6 months if not shorter.
Next, Housing is of upmost importance but has been mislabeled a “Housing Crisis” in reality the Commonwealth has a “Housing Affordability Crisis” and The MBTA Communities Act is an overreaching zoning land grab (no pun intended) for a chosen few in the long run. Wilmington has pushed a vote on it to the fall. Tewksbury has overwhelmingly voted it down. I Oppose it per State overreach.
The backbone of our district, our state, and our amazing country is the working family. I promise to introduce a Paid 5 Sick Day Bill that is not part of FMLA and where earned Time is ABSOLUTELY not involved. Raising the Earned Income tax Credit for the working Poor, Pay Equity, Time and a Half, Sunday Double Time, wage theft and many other workers issues need to be addressed which I will do.
The young King David once said, “Have we not a cause?” Today, I echo his words. Yes, we do have a cause. It is a righteous cause for the middle class to increase, not to disappear under the weight of ever-increasing taxes and the growing percentage of wealth going to the billionaire class. We, the middle majority, need to band together and send a clear message to Beacon Hill that THE STATUS QUO on the major issues is on its way out.
Join me as we work to create a society where the middle class thru opportunity and personal responsibility doesn’t just survive but thrives. Let’s send a strong message that we are not just bystanders, but ACTIVE players in shaping our future.
This is our time, this is our cause, together let’s make it happen. Thank you.
May God bless America and May God bless the Commonwealth.
Sincerely,
George Ferdinand
