STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Wilmington’s Cara Wong To Intern With Ocean River Institute This Summer, Focus On Protecting Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale

Below is a press release from the Ocean River Institute:

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington resident Cara Wong will be spending her summer following her passion for improving the environment by interning for nonprofit Ocean River Institute (ORI).

Wong, a senior at Suffolk University in the fall, will be working with ORI on projects related to protection of the North Atlantic right whale and the Miyawaki forests. She will also take part in tabling events and broadcasts on local television networks to spread awareness about various issues related to improving and protecting the environment.

“Our first priority is the protection of the North Atlantic right whale, a species that is critically endangered,” she said. “ORI is working to create a marine sanctuary for these whales, who migrate up the U.S. East Coast. We are also researching how the forests on land can help aid not only human mental and physical health, but provide benefits to environmental health in the atmosphere, on land, and in the oceans.”

Wong double majors in Political Science and Environmental Studies. Her passion for environmental issues was sparked during her sophomore year at Suffolk.

“I have always been interested in the environment but it truly came to be a passion when Suffolk restarted its debate team and my team argued that the United States should grant legal personhood to nature,” said Wong. “I learned a great deal about environmental laws and rights for different facets of nature from that experience. I have researched a lot about deforestation policies and the impact it has on the planet. It is something that I am particularly passionate about and hope to do some work in that area after college.”

ORI President & Executive Dr. Rob Moir welcomes the help from Wong and his other young interns this summer.

“When it comes to saving the environment, college students bring a lot of knowledge, are inquisitive, untangle the complexities, and develop communication skills,” said Moir. “Cara has been a great help; we are fortunate to have her.”

Launched in 2007, Ocean River Institute provides expertise, services, resources, and information unavailable on a localized level to support efforts of environmental organizations. Please visit www.oceanriver.org for more information.
