Below is a press release from the Wilmington Police Department:
WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Police Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a generous grant from the Wilmington Community Fund to purchase a SafetyNet Tracking System. This technology will significantly enhance our capabilities in locating and rescuing individuals who are at risk, such as those with cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, or other developmental disabilities.
The SafetyNet Tracking System employs radio frequency technology to track and locate individuals wearing a personalized transmitter bracelet. When a person goes missing, the system allows trained public safety personnel to quickly and efficiently locate them, often reducing search times from hours to minutes. This is a vital resource in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community’s most vulnerable members.
Chief Joseph Desmond expressed his gratitude, stating, “The acquisition of the SafetyNet Tracking System will greatly enhance our department’s ability to swiftly locate and assist individuals who are at risk. This grant from the Wilmington Community Fund is a testament to the strong support we receive from our community, and we are committed to utilizing this technology to ensure the safety of our residents.”
Sergeant Michael Wandell, who is coordinating the program for the department, added, “This program is a game-changer for our search and rescue operations. The SafetyNet Tracking System provides us with the tools we need to respond rapidly and effectively in situations where time is of the essence. We encourage families and caregivers of at-risk individuals to reach out and learn more about how this system can provide peace of mind.”
Anyone interested in participating in the program or seeking more information is encouraged to contact Sergeant Michael Wandell at mwandell@wpd.org or 978-658-5071.
