Below is a press release from Wilmington Public Schools:
WILMINGTON, MA — On Wednesday, March 4, 2024, Wilmington Public Schools hosted the annual pre-K to 8 STEM Fair at the Wilmington Middle School.
Nearly 400 students and their families attended the event.
The Analog Devices Foundation funded the event, which was also supported by the Wilmington Educational Foundation.
The STEM Fair Planning Committee — consisting of Amy Iascone (NIS fifth grade and science lead teacher), Julie Kim (WHS chemistry teacher and Science CTL), Michelle LeVesque (K-5 STEM Coordinator), Mary Beth Valuk (WHS Math teacher and Math CTL), and Stephanie Zimbaldi (Boutwell PreK teacher) — began planning for the evening in November, finalizing 17 hands-on activity stations.
Popular activities included make-your-own lava lamps, kinetic sand, magnet mazes, planting, 3d printing, robotics and rain cloud in a jar.
In addition to the hands-on stations, the planning committee found support from local community organizations and businesses, including Wilmington Memorial Library, Mitre, MIT (Superfund Research Lab & Lincoln Lab), Zoo New England, Mystic River Watershed Association, USAF Civil Air Patrol, Analog Devices, the Energy Barre, Science Pirates, and Bill Crocker’s strobe light exhibit. All of these organizations provided opportunities for families to interact and engage with hands-on learning simulations and activities to better understand how STEM is everywhere in our daily lives.
Wilmington High School was well represented with representation from the WMS and WHS Robotics Teams, Environmental Club, Science Club, and Medical Careers Club, in addition to nearly 50 WHS student volunteers, including members from the National Honor Society and the Wildcat Service Council.
The evening would not have been possible without the support of the Wilmington Public Schools staff members who gave their time to support the fair and run these stations. A special shout-out to Lissa Ahern, Melissa Bettencourt, Diane Carreiro, Renee Deschene, Kerry Feyler, Ashlynn Finn, Willow Gertz, Michelle Hooper, Nicole Hoxholli, Sarah James, Ed Kaizer, Marlene King, Heather Lozzi, Katherine McKenna, Laura Murray, Joan Parisi, Charles Ronchetti, Laurie Saija, Jeremy Salerno, Sharon Tener, Christine Venezia, and Patricia Welch.
The STEM Fair Planning Committee has already begun to talk about how to make improvements to next year’s fair so that we can continue to provide enriching and engaging STEM learning experiences to WPS families.
